John Greenshields Award carved by Gavin Saunders
An award has been set up in memory of local farmer John Greenshields, recognising the outstanding contribution he made to the conservation of the Blackdown Hills, and in helping others to better understand and engage with the landscape.
The John Greenshields award will be presented annually to an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to the Blackdown Hills in one or more of the following areas:
- Nature recovery.
- Climate action.
- Sustainable farming.
- Conservation and/or celebration of heritage, arts or culture.
- Engaging people in any of the above (especially those who are currently under-represented).
The award is jointly organised and funded by the Blackdown Hills National Landscape and the National Trust.
Through this award we aim to:
- Celebrate the achievements individuals and groups have made in the Blackdown Hills.
- Inspire others to take action, no matter how small, and make a difference in the local area.
The prize
The winner of the award will receive:
- A commemorative wood carving produced locally using local wood. This will be kept for a year, and then passed to the new award winner the following year.
- 20 locally sourced native trees with protective guards, to be planted in the Blackdown Hills at a location chosen by the award winner.
How to enter
Nominations are welcomed throughout the year.
You may nominate yourself, your organisation, or another individual or group. If nominating someone else, please ensure they are happy to be nominated before submitting an entry.

Selection process
All eligible nominations will be considered by a judging panel. The winner will be selected based on the significance and impact of their contribution to the Blackdown Hills and how their work reflects the aims of the award.
Entrants and nominees will be informed of the outcome following the judging process.

The judging panel comprises representatives from the Blackdown Hills National Landscape Partnership, the National Trust and the Greenshields family.
