SUMMARY:Dunkeswell Abbey guided tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-hour guided tour of Dunkeswell Abbey\, a monastic site\, nestled in a beautiful rural location in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. \nTours will be at 11am\, 1pm and 3pm. \nThe Abbey was founded in 1201 by William Brewer as a colony of the mother house of Forde Abbey in Dorset. By the time of its dissolution in 1539\, it had a substantial estate and was a major monastic house. Today\, only the gatehouse and fragments of the west range survive. \nDuring the tour\, you’ll discover what Dunkeswell Abbey would have looked like when it was built and what life was like for the Cistercian monks who lived there. We will also share the latest results from the geophysical survey by Historic England. The Holy Trinity Church\, built in 1842 by the women of the Simcoe family on the site of the Abbey\, will be open with its 13th century medieval floor tiles on view. \nA pop-up community café selling tea and cake will be on site\, giving you more time to relax in this picturesque and peaceful setting in the Madford Valley. Please bring cash for payment. \nPlease note there are no toilets on site. \nBooking is essential due to very limited parking. If you intend to arrive on foot or by bike please contact us as we might be able to accommodate you on a tour\, even if all tickets have gone. \nClick here to book your place \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hemyock Castle Heritage Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Pre-booked self-guided tours to see the rare surviving ruins of Hemyock’s moated medieval castle. \nHemyock Castle dates from 1380\, fortifying an older manor house. It was ‘slighted’ (destroyed) during the English Civil War period in the 1640s\, after two brutal sieges. Some buildings were later adapted for farm or residential use\, but most of the ruins were not ‘restored’ by later owners; so a rare survival of some original castle defences. \nA large part of the eastern gatehouse archway remains\, together with parts of some towers\, curtain walls and moat which surround the old manor house. See also the ancient cider press\, pottery and farmyard displays. \nThe manor house and some other buildings are private homes and closed to visitors. \nThere are special displays for ‘creativity unwrapped’ opening windows into the past\, by creative reuse of artefacts and technology. \nHemyock Castle’s Heritage Open Day is on Sunday 10 September 2023\, 2pm to 5pm\, with bookings at 2pm\, 230pm\, 3pm\, 3.30pm\, and 4pm. Approximately 15 bookings per half-hour. \nEntry is free for Heritage Open Day. \nPrinted Guide Book: £2 (cash only please) \nFacilities: No toilets on site. Toilets & disabled toilets in nearby St Mary’s Church & near Hemyock village hall \nNearby St Mary’s Church will also be open\, with special displays and serving teas. \nBooking essential – please email: admin3@hemyockcastle.uk \nPlease book any disabled parking needed. \nBooking closes on 9 September 2023 at 6pm \nDirections: enter from Culmstock Road\, through iron gates. Limited onsite parking. (Priority to disabled visitors.) Additional on-street parking or in the village car-park near Hemyock Baptist Church. Click here for travel details. \nGoogle Maps: Hemyock Castle\nwhat3words: ///charcoal.conceals.simply \n
