SUMMARY:Community Heritage Forum meeting
DESCRIPTION:Blackdown Hills AONB’s Community Heritage Forum meets every six months to share information and celebrate the rich heritage of the Blackdown Hills AONB. The purpose of the Forum is to: \n\nIdentify key areas of work to focus on together\nProvide a focus for areas of work/investigation that have ‘grass roots’ support\nHelp us better understand the historic and cultural heritage of the Blackdown Hills AONB and take strategic action to conserve & enhance it.\n\nMeeting on 29 October\nAfter an update on current project work\, discussions will turn to planning future project work that the Community Heritage Forum sees as a priority and can engage with. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for participants to influence the new management plan for Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. \nLandscape archaeologist\, Dr Christopher Smart will be presenting the results of the excavation and analysis of technological remains from Hemyock. \nThe talk will cover: \n\nAn examination of early medieval iron technology including the largest group of furnaces of the late 9th to early 10th centuries in Britain\, which has afforded a re-examination and modelling of all other dated examples in the UK\, and a review of technological change in iron production.\nThe study of a later major pottery production centre\, dated c. 1500-1550.\nEvidence for the contemporary landscape context of and historical framework behind these industries\, the relationship with extraction sites\, and the wider environmental impacts that they had.\n\nDr Christopher Smart\,  Department of Archaeology\, University of Exeter\, is author of the new book ‘Industry and the Making of a Rural landscape’ highlighting the importance of Hemyock and the surrounding area. \nNewcomers welcome. \n  \n
